[The fact that Imogene’s words very clearly mean the opposite of how they are spoken, that she is obviously far from okay almost makes Dagny ask if she’s sure, but he stays quiet and is eventually rewarded by her next statement, heartbreaking and likely untrue. He’s not Isaac, but he can do his best to take his place.]
What do you mean? What happened? [It’s not like Imogene to be dramatic, she is usually fairly grounded in reality, too many hard truths happening all the time to her. It worries him to hear her speak like this.]
It's nothing serious. Nobody's hurt, nothing's -- it's not like that.
[It's a quick reassurance; there's too much that's really gone wrong in their lives, all three of them. She doesn't want to give anyone a reason to freak out.]
I just spent some time with... my ex, I guess, I don't know, it's all a huge fucking mess. [She lets out a rough laugh, the fact that she's holding back tears more audible than she wants it to be, dropping her head back gently against the wall.] God. I'm sorry, this is really stupid.
[He lets out another breath at her reassurance, something is clearly wrong but at least no one is hurt. When she mentions her ex he quickly thinks back to whether or not Isaac ever told him about someone in Imogene’s life, if he would know who that is. He can assume from her reaction that it didn’t end well.] It’s not stupid. That stuff has a way of bringing up old feelings.
It wasn’t a good visit I’m guessing? [To be fair, Dagny doesn’t have many ex’s, he has old hook ups that he probably wouldn’t want to see again but never really got serious with anyone until Isaac, never saw the point, so while he’s sympathetic, he doesn’t quite understand.]
[Neither of them have talked about Sasha much in general once he was gone for a while, especially not in context of their relationship. It felt easier that way, at least for Imogene -- occasionally Isaac's motivations are a mystery even to her. It didn't feel like there'd be anything worth bringing up, anyway.]
It was for a while. [Her voice is small, almost guilty. She shouldn't have let it go the way she did; she had no way of knowing that, but it still feels like her fault.] But it can't happen again, and I-- I'm so tired of missing him, you know? I don't know how to stop.
Genie. [He doesn’t really have any advice, doesn’t know what it’s like to miss someone he can’t be with. He got lucky, his soulmate is amazing, he knows that isn’t always the case.
It mean he doesn’t feel for her though, his heart breaking that she feels this way at all. If he could take it from her he would.] Did you tell him? That you need some space?
No. [She doesn't think she'd have managed, even if she wanted to. Space is the last thing she really wants.] He... had to leave for a while.
[She's not explaining it well and she knows that, but she's too strung out and tired to try to go into the whole story right now. She's not sure how much Dagny knows to begin with and she doesn't really want to explain everything.]
And he met his soulmate now. So I guess I'll get that space no matter what. [There's so much bitterness there that she immediately feels bad for letting it slip, but there's no taking it back. She wants them both to be happy, she really does. It's just... hard not to feel alone.]
